Four sites in the greater Lincolnshire area have been designated as “at risk” and awarded funding for repairs and restoration. Waltham Windmill near Grimsby, The Harlequin in Steep Hill, Lincoln, Hussey Tower in Boston, and the Horncastle Conservation Area have been added to Heritage England’s risk register. These locations are among 21 sites in Lincolnshire placed on the register due to being vacant, deteriorating, or having been vandalised. Historic England has provided grants for these sites to facilitate their repair and enable their return to operational status. Waltham Windmill is endangered by rainwater seepage, which is causing its wood to rot. This distinctive Victorian six-sail windmill was fully functional before its sails were removed for significant maintenance work. Repairs have commenced, supported by a £63,120 grant from Historic England. The Harlequin is at risk due to its vacancy. Formerly known as The Harlequin Inn, it most recently operated as a second-hand bookshop until its closure several years ago. A £59,656 grant from Historic England is funding repairs to adjacent buildings, which will be leased as holiday rentals to finance the overall restoration. Hussey Tower, a historic landmark in Boston, faces serious risk from vandalism. It has received a £26,119 grant for urgent repairs and enhanced security. Within the Horncastle Conservation Area, several historic buildings are vacant and in poor condition, with others having lost traditional features. Historic England stated its objective is to “enhance the characterful historic town.” Historic England regional director Louise Brennan commented, “This year, we have seen partners and communities come together to help save the historic buildings and places that need it the most.” She further added, “Together, we can save our places and find new ways to enjoy the heritage that people value so much.” Heritage minister Sir Chris Bryant stated, “The Heritage at Risk Register plays a vital role in our ongoing mission to protect and preserve our rich heritage across the country.” He also expressed, “Many beloved sites have been removed from the list this year and I hope that more will be saved thanks to their inclusion this year.” Post navigation New Gritter Lorry Names Revealed, Including ‘Taylor Drift’ Resident ‘honoured’ to serve as custodian of garden graves
