A paint recycling initiative in Lincolnshire has been utilized by over 20 individuals during its inaugural week of operation. The waste recycling centre in Grantham has commenced operations of a Community RePaint store. This facility allows individuals to deposit opened or unwanted paint tins, and those deemed suitable for reuse are then offered to other members of the public without charge. Lincolnshire County Council has indicated its intention to implement similar programs at additional locations in the coming year. Daniel McNally, the executive councillor for waste, stated: “Each year around 50 million litres of paint are thrown away across the UK and we get a fair amount of nearly-new and sometimes unopened paint dropped off at our recycling centres in Lincolnshire.” He added: “Through this scheme, we’re stopping a lot of this paint going to waste by allowing people to come along and take what they might need.” Individuals wishing to contribute paint or acquire it from the store are advised to consult a staff member present at the site. The program is designed to accept most varieties of paint. Community RePaint operates as a nationwide network across the UK, receiving sponsorship from Dulux, and encompasses over 80 initiatives throughout the country. Councillor McNally further commented: “If you’ve got a smaller job that needs doing, or something you just want to give a new lease of life to, this could save you some money on buying new.” He also noted: “Alongside our successful Reuse Shop at Tattershall, this is another way we’re thinking differently about our waste, trying to reduce the amount we throw away and reuse items as many times as possible.” Grantham holds the distinction of being the initial location in Lincolnshire to provide this service, with plans for its expansion to additional household waste recycling centres within the county during 2025.
