An alert has been issued to individuals visiting a Cornish beach regarding a “hazardous” life raft that came ashore. According to Friends of Portheras Cove, the raft appeared on the coast on 2 December. Coastguards subsequently relocated it to a secure spot, placing a “do not touch” advisory, as they sought to contact its owners for collection. Delia Webb, a marine biologist and a member of the aforementioned group, stated that the life raft, which remained in its canister, was “tampered with” during Wednesday night, leading to its inflation. She further explained that the group re-notified the coastguard “at first light” about the situation, noting that the raft now occupies “a really hazardous position and some of its contents, [such as emergency flares], are hazardous.” “It’s in the worst position, because as you get on to the cove it’s right at the bottom of the steps,” Ms Webb commented. She also mentioned that the coastguard had attempted to reach the life raft’s owners. “We’re hoping somebody moves it,” she stated, adding that its substantial weight would “need a team of people or a helicopter” for removal.
