Lewes District Council has announced that parking will be complimentary on Saturdays in Lewes throughout the upcoming Christmas period. This measure, affecting 13 municipal car parks on December 7, 14, and 21, is intended to provide assistance to local businesses. The Friars Walk car park will also be available without charge exclusively on December 14, as farmers’ markets are scheduled to take place on the other two Saturdays. Councillor Wendy Maples stated: “Choosing local, independent businesses for your Christmas shopping is not only great for the economic health of the town, it can have a much lower environmental impact.” The car parks included in this initiative are Brook Street, Cliffe High Street, East Street, Little East Street, The Maltings, Market Lane, Mountfield Road, Phoenix Causeway, Pinwell Road, South Street (North), Spring Gardens, The Needlemakers (West Street), and Westgate Street. Additionally, free parking is already provided at existing council-run car parks located in Seaford, Newhaven, Peacehaven, Telscombe, Ringmer, Barcombe, and Ditchling.
