The yearly bonfire celebration in Lewes, held to commemorate Guy Fawkes Night, drew an estimated 40,000 attendees. On Tuesday, various bonfire societies paraded through the crowded streets of the East Sussex town, carrying large effigies and illuminated torches. Sussex Police reported that the festivities were more heavily attended than the previous year, although the majority of the crowd had dispersed by midnight. Officers confirmed that four arrests took place, with three men still held in custody. Chief Superintendent Howard Hodges released a statement, stating: “We thank the public for their support to ensure the Lewes Bonfire celebrations were once again a spectacular event that have been enjoyed safely.” One of the effigies showcased highlighted concerns regarding sewage and water quality, while another depicted Paula Vennells, the former chief executive of the Post Office during the Horizon scandal. Police also confirmed that paramedics from St John Ambulance and South East Coast Ambulance provided medical treatment to 46 individuals, three of whom were transported to hospital. The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service also addressed a limited number of incidents. A police spokesperson stated in a social media post: “The Lewes Bonfire celebrations are both unique and challenging, requiring months of planning and preparation by emergency services, local authorities, transport operators, and partner agencies who have worked closely with bonfire societies and the local community.” Police provided further details on the arrests, confirming that two men, aged 24 and 25, were apprehended on suspicion of common assault. A third man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in a public place. These three individuals are currently in custody. Additionally, a 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knuckle duster but has since been de-arrested.
