SwimwithJo, a swimming club based in Leicestershire known for accommodating all abilities, has been honored with a national award. The organization, led by Jo Whiteman, conducts lessons at numerous pools throughout the county and was designated Swim School of the Year by Swim England, the sport’s governing body. Ms. Whiteman commented on their distinctive approach, stating, “I think that we stand out from the rest of the swim schools because we are so inclusive – we just don’t turn anybody away.” The awards ceremony took place on Saturday at Birmingham University’s Great Hall. SwimwithJo was among 250 swim schools that applied for the accolade, ultimately advancing to the final three participants present at the event. Reflecting on the moment of triumph, Ms. Whiteman added, “We waited and we found out there and then that we’d won the award.” She described the achievement as “really, really magnificent,” and acknowledged the collective effort, stating, “All our team, all our members of staff helped us achieve this award.” Ms. Whiteman further explained her dedication to ensuring widespread access to swimming education, noting that she “bends over backwards and moves classes around to give as many people as possible the chance to learn how to swim.” She emphasized the critical importance of swimming skills, remarking, “One day it could save your life.” Discussing their teaching methods, she added, “We teach through fun and play. If you’re enjoying something, you don’t realise you’re learning and then it becomes easier and easier.”
