Leicester City’s manager, Amandine Miquel, despite her relatively short tenure, is described as “making warriors” within the team. The club’s goalscorer, Missy Goodwin, who entered the match against Chelsea as a substitute and was later substituted out, contributed to a significant result. Although Leicester has only scored three goals in 10 Women’s Super League matches and secured just one league victory, they notably ended Chelsea’s perfect record under manager Sonia Bompastor. The 1-1 draw at King Power Stadium on Sunday, where Leicester maintained a lead for 77 minutes, suggests progress under Miquel, notwithstanding recent challenges. Facing an injury crisis, difficulties in scoring, and being joint-bottom in the league before Sunday’s match against the champions, Leicester defied expectations by demonstrating strong defensive play and frustrating Chelsea. Miquel stated, “I know points are what worries everyone in the industry but my job is to make a group of players become warriors and it’s taking time, but we’re going to get there.” She added, “It’s a collective sport and the only thing that makes a difference when you have less money and less quality – is the mentality.” Miquel has consistently maintained composure even when results have been challenging. Having spent eight seasons at Reims before her summer move to Leicester, she possesses experience in developing long-term projects. This week, she light-heartedly addressed the team’s unfortunate injury streak, reassuring her players that their current difficulties would not persist indefinitely. Miquel commented, “We tend to make it look like it’s the end of the world but every morning when I wake up, and I hope the players now do the same, I think [about how] we get paid to put the ball in the goal.” She continued, “There are worse things happening in life. We have the chance to be paid to play a game – so it’s OK. We have the chance to do our dream job. “We have to make sure we enjoy every moment and stay positive because no matter what happens – sometimes a lot happens against you – that positivity can help things come back better.” Prior to Saturday’s match, Bompastor humorously remarked that her French counterpart “always tries to surprise me.” Miquel’s optimistic outlook proved beneficial as Leicester provided spectators at King Power Stadium with considerable excitement. Missy Goodwin entered the game early, replacing the injured Deanne Rose, and subsequently scored the initial goal only 13 minutes later, concluding a well-executed team play. Goodwin stated after the match, “We are all really happy as a team. They [Chelsea] haven’t lost a point this season. We’re really happy to be able to do it.” She added, “We worked really hard as a team. It’s a step in the right direction. It was more about a mentality approach.” Leicester City is currently one point ahead of Crystal Palace, who are at the bottom of the league. Supporters at King Power Stadium rose to their feet, applauding and cheering enthusiastically at half-time, impressed by Leicester’s performance, and their enthusiasm remained justified 45 minutes later. Although Chelsea ultimately secured an equalizer, Leicester demonstrated their capability to compete with the top teams in the WSL, earning a vital point. Following the final whistle, Chelsea players expressed their disappointment by kneeling, while Leicester celebrated in a huddle within the six-yard box, an area they had defended for over an hour. Miquel remarked, “We were willing to give them a lot of trouble. It went very well because we scored on a rare occasion that we had [a chance].” She continued, “To be able to lead against this type of team and hold it for so long is very important mentally for our team to move on from here.” Miquel concluded, “We’ve seen that with mentality and team effort, even when you have less quality, you can compete. It’s a collective effort.” While Leicester’s current statistics are not favorable, there was a sense of optimism surrounding the team this summer, following Miquel’s tactical approach impressing opposing teams during pre-season. They delivered a strong performance on the opening weekend, despite a 1-0 loss to Arsenal, but have since been missing crucial players. The team’s frontline has been particularly affected by injuries, with Lena Petermann and Jutta Rantala both sidelined, and Rose’s substitution against Chelsea further exacerbates Miquel’s worries. Nevertheless, Miquel remains confident that Leicester’s on-pitch performance is improving, her style is being effectively implemented, and positive results will follow. Miquel stated, “Yes it’s not an ideal start but I am someone who has been very patient. I don’t believe any change could be done in two months – even if we had no injuries.” She added, “We would not have ended up third by the winter break, that’s for sure. It takes time. The hard part is when it doesn’t go well. “We need all of us – the staff and the players – instead of panicking and trying to change the plan, we need to keep confidence.” Post navigation Rangers Manager Philippe Clement Addresses Job Speculation, New CEO Appointment, and Europa League Match Jacob Stockdale Secures New Two-Year Deal with Ulster
