Over 100 lamp-posts and road signs in a section of Leicester city centre are currently undergoing a vibrant artistic transformation. A collection of 19 distinct designs, developed by artists, designers, and members of the public, will be featured on columns throughout the Cultural Quarter. Leicester City Council stated that this initiative aims to support local artists and highlight the “creative atmosphere” prevalent in the vicinity of Curve, Phoenix, and Makers’ Yard. Assistant Mayor Vi Dempster expressed her conviction that the artworks “will bring colour and vibrancy.” She further explained: “By highlighting pedestrian routes and linking cultural venues, residents and visitors passing through the Cultural Quarter will recognise that they are in a culturally specific area, where local artists and makers are supported and encouraged to showcase their work.” Among the artists and organizations whose creations are slated for display are Lucy Stevens, Stuart Hicking, Tazim Hamid, Miriam Bean, Disembodied Legs, and Georgia Wilkinson.
