Various residents of a town, including a postman, a butcher, and a pub landlord, have collaborated to produce a nude calendar in support of Prostate Cancer UK. The majority of the individuals featured in the calendar, who hail from Leek in Staffordshire, have either personally experienced cancer or been directly impacted by it, prompting their desire to contribute in an enjoyable manner. Lee ‘Mr October’ Dawson, for instance, endured the loss of both his parents to the illness and has himself recently recovered from it. “Everyone wanted to help out. We wanted all the people that everyone knows in Leek and we managed to get them all,” he stated. These calendars are being sold in local pubs and shops for £10 apiece, with all proceeds designated for charity. Furthermore, each page features a #saveleekhospital logo, aiming to encourage public support for the town’s minor injuries unit, which some residents are concerned may be at risk. The concept for this fundraising initiative originated as a suggestion at The Blue Mugge pub during a conversation among the men over drinks. Nigel ‘Mr October’ Maycock commented, “We were on about the Calendar Girls, raising money and a lot of us have experienced something to do with cancer.” He added, “Before we knew it, it goes from a couple of pints thinking ‘Should we do it, shouldn’t we do it’ – well, let’s do it!” Maycock described a surreal morning when his friends, Lee Dawson and Nigel Walwyn, assembled in their dressing gowns in the car park of the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council offices. Paul ‘Mr June’ Harrison, the landlord of The Blue Mugge, expressed pride in the support the calendar has garnered thus far, including complimentary printing services provided by local printers, Graffiti Graphics. “The people of Leek will always get behind things,” he remarked, adding, “Anything that’s in the community, people’ll pull together and try to do the best for our town.”
