Leeds City Council is poised to appoint a former senior civil servant to the role of its new chief executive. Ed Whiting, whose career includes positions at HM Treasury and 10 Downing Street, is anticipated to assume the responsibilities next year. Subject to formal approval, Mr. Whiting will succeed Mariana Pexton, who has served as interim chief executive since her appointment earlier this year after Tom Riordan’s departure. Mr. Whiting, a native of Leeds, expressed that he was “looking forward” to joining the council. His current position is Director of Cities and Local Growth, a role he holds across both the Department for Business and Trade and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government. In 2016, Mr. Whiting received an OBE for his contributions to public service and No. 10 Downing Street. He resides in West Yorkshire with his partner, David, and they are foster carers for a young baby. Council leader James Lewis stated: “Throughout the extensive recruitment and selection process, Ed’s understanding of Leeds, our collective city ambitions, our values, our challenges and ideas for the future made him the best candidate for the role.” Mr. Whiting commented: “I love Leeds and am excited to be part of the next chapter of our city’s story. “I’m looking forward to joining the team as we work together on both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our brilliant city.”” Earlier this year, Mr. Riordan departed from the council to assume a position as a permanent secretary within the Department of Health and Social Care.
