Industrial action planned by employees at Leeds Bradford Airport during the Christmas period has been cancelled following the resolution of a payment dispute. Approximately 50 members of the Unite union, who work as ramp agents at the facility, had intended to initiate a walkout from December 19 to January 4. Unite stated that Swissport, their employer, had declined to provide its staff with a monthly cold weather payment of £125, a sum that Swissport employees at other airports are paid. Personnel will now be issued the funds “in recognition of the work undertaken”, according to a union spokesperson. These cold weather payments, also referred to as de-icing payments, are provided to ground staff for undertaking extra responsibilities during the winter season. Unite had previously cautioned that the proposed industrial action could have resulted in “enormous disruption” to flights at the airport during the Christmas holiday period. Chris Muscroft, the union’s regional officer, confirmed that an agreement was achieved following “positive negotiations” with Swissport. He added, “A payment has been agreed in recognition of the work undertaken and an agreement reached for closer working going forward to avoid a similar situation again.” Swissport has been approached for comment.
