Larne achieved a 2-0 victory over Crusaders at Inver Park on Tuesday, thereby advancing to a County Antrim Shield final scheduled for January 21 against Glentoran. This upcoming final offers Tiernan Lynch’s team the chance to win the competition for the fifth consecutive time. Their opponent, Glentoran, was also the team they defeated 2-1 in last season’s Shield final. Larne’s progression was secured by a Lewis Barr own goal and a direct corner kick goal from Mark Randall. During the match, Crusaders’ Philip Lowry was sent off for kicking out at Conor McKendry. Scoring opportunities were scarce in the initial stages of the game, until Larne broke the deadlock in the 18th minute with their first significant offensive play. Conor McKendry’s cross was deflected by Barr, past his own goalkeeper, prompting Benji Magee to initiate Larne’s celebrations. Crusaders responded effectively, with Ross Clarke hitting the crossbar from a 25-yard free-kick. Larne doubled their lead under unusual circumstances when Randall’s corner kick sailed directly over Crusaders goalkeeper Ryan Kerr and into the net in the 33rd minute. Randall subsequently hit the crossbar himself with a free-kick during first-half stoppage time, with the home side maintaining firm control of the match. The second half also began slowly; however, Crusaders were reduced to ten men just before the 60-minute mark when captain Lowry received a straight red card for kicking out at McKendry following an altercation during a midfield free-kick. Larne failed to fully capitalize on their numerical advantage, as their second-half performance lacked the same intensity. Nonetheless, Crusaders’ goalkeeper Kerr made several excellent saves, notably denying Matty Lusty multiple times. His most notable save, however, was from a powerful McKendry shot from the right wing, which he tipped onto the bar, subsequently preventing Joe Thomson from scoring on the rebound. In the other semi-final played on Tuesday, Glentoran defeated Ballymena United 2-0.
