Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of US President-elect Donald Trump, has announced her decision to no longer seek a position in the Senate. Her resignation this month as co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) had led to speculation that she could be a potential successor to outgoing Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, whom President-elect Trump has put forward for the role of secretary of state. However, in a statement posted on X, she confirmed her withdrawal from consideration, citing it came “after an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many”. She also extended her good wishes to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as he undertakes the task of selecting a replacement to complete the remainder of Senator Rubio’s six-year term, which is scheduled to conclude in 2026. On Saturday, in her X post, Lara Trump stated: “I could not have been more honoured to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida.” She additionally mentioned that she plans to make a significant announcement in January, though she did not provide any further specifics. Lara Trump’s election as RNC co-chair occurred in March, a move that reinforced her father-in-law’s sway within the party during his presidential campaign. Prior to the election, she, along with her husband, Eric Trump, and his elder brother, Don Jr., became prominent campaign surrogates for the Republican candidate.
