Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, has relinquished her position as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). This move occurs amidst discussions that she might occupy a potential Senate vacancy in Florida. She announced her departure via social media, stating, “the job I came to do is now complete,” and highlighted the RNC’s achievements in fundraising and voter participation. While she did not disclose her subsequent plans, some associates of Trump have advocated for her to succeed Senator Marco Rubio, who is the president-elect’s nominee for secretary of state. Should Senator Rubio receive confirmation from the Senate as America’s chief diplomat, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would then select an individual to complete the remainder of Rubio’s six-year term, which is scheduled to conclude in 2026. In an interview with the Associated Press, Lara Trump indicated her willingness to consider assuming Rubio’s seat. She remarked, “It is something I would seriously consider.” She added, “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like.” Having been appointed as RNC co-chair in March, Trump was personally chosen by her father-in-law, further illustrating his firm control over the Republican party. Alongside her husband, Eric, and his elder brother, Don Jr., Lara Trump emerged as a prominent campaign surrogate for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign this year. On X, previously known as Twitter, she wrote, “Serving as the GOP co-chair throughout the course of the most consequential election in American history has truly been the honor of my life.” She also expressed gratitude to her father-in-law, stating: “we are so proud of you, and I’m grateful you trusted me in this position.” A number of Republicans, including Florida Senator Rick Scott, have publicly endorsed her as a potential successor to Rubio in the Senate. Last month, Maye Musk, the mother of close Trump ally Elon Musk, explicitly backed Lara Trump for the Senate, posting on X: “The next senator for Florida should be [Lara Trump]. The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets.” Elon Musk responded to this post, commenting: “Lara Trump is genuinely great.” The Florida Senate position is slated for re-election in 2028.
