Leaders of a charity initiative aimed at constructing 24 residences for individuals experiencing homelessness in Guernsey have announced the receipt of two land offers. Caritas reported accumulating over £7,000 in contributions from both private donors and commercial entities, in addition to the aforementioned land proposals for the development of modular housing. Concurrently, the organization indicated that the construction sector, encompassing architects and builders, had extended offers of assistance, available either pro bono or at a specified cost. The charity estimated that approximately 1,000 individuals, representing 1.8% of the population, currently lack secure housing. It further stated that the residences would be constructed in two stages, with occupants permitted to reside there for a maximum duration of two years. Chairman Graham Merfield expressed that he was “overwhelmed and really thankful” for the backing Caritas has garnered since the project’s inception in September. He informed BBC Radio Guernsey, “We’ve had offers of two properties and we are currently evaluating the potential for planning on one of those.” He added, “In parallel we have had very positive dialogue with the States. We’ve identified five potential properties they own which we could use and we’ve been told that our project will be put on the political agenda in the coming weeks.” Mr. Merfield stated he remained “very optimistic we’re going to find a solution” and anticipated the project advancing further next year. He further described, “The modular homes would be a complete home with sitting area, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen to house one person.” He characterized them as “very sleek, very modern and come complete ready to use.” He emphasized, “As important as building the homes and putting a roof over peoples heads is, the support we aim to provide for people to help them get back on their feet and into the community is as important.” Caritas also confirmed its collaboration with The Big Skipton Sleep Out, scheduled for 24 January, an event where islanders spend a night outdoors to generate awareness and financial contributions.
