The Labour Party has named Karen Clark as its chosen candidate for the mayoral election scheduled for next year. Ms. Clark, who currently serves the Longbenton and Benton ward on North Tyneside Council, emerged victorious over two competitors to secure the party’s nomination for the region’s elected mayor position. Clark expressed that it was “truly an honour” to be chosen. The internal selection process within the party commenced following the announcement in May by the current officeholder, Dame Norma Redfearn, that she would not pursue re-election. Dame Norma Redfearn has occupied the role since 2013, having defeated the then-Conservative incumbent, Linda Arkley. Clark secured her nomination by defeating David Slater in a ballot among local party members. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, fellow councillor Joe Kirwin also participated in the contest but did not advance to the shortlist. The successful candidate stated: “I’m standing to be the elected mayor because I love North Tyneside and its people. “It’s already a fantastic place to live, work and visit, together I know we can build on that.” Clark presently serves as North Tyneside Council’s cabinet member for Public Health and Wellbeing. She is also the co-founding director of the Justice Prince Community Interest Company, a voluntary organisation dedicated to addressing regional economic and social inequalities.
