A Labour Member of Parliament representing Wiltshire experienced a defeat in a charitable jiu-jitsu contest when competing against a professional mixed martial artist. Will Stone, the MP for Swindon North, was defeated by seasoned fighter Matt Inman during the event, which took place at Fairfield Halls in Croydon, located in south London. Mr. Stone, who holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and previously served as a soldier, yielded by submission at the four-minute and 37-second mark, approximately midway through the scheduled 10-minute contest. Both participants had committed to contributing the funds generated from the occasion to The Kelly Foundation, a mental health organization situated within Mr. Stone’s constituency. This particular fight was featured as part of an event orchestrated by Polaris, recognized as Europe’s foremost professional grappling promotion, which contacted Mr. Stone following his election. Prior to his career in politics, after concluding his military service, Stone operated a martial arts facility and frequently participated in the national grappling circuit. Ahead of the contest, the Member of Parliament stated: “I did the trials for Polaris twice and didn’t quite make the cut, but after I became the first ever Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt MP, they reached out to me.” He further added regarding the opportunity: “It’s an amazing opportunity to elevate the sport so I had to take it.”
