A Christmas-themed knitted postbox decoration, intended as a surprise for nursery children, was vandalized by young individuals just days following its installation. The Syston Knitting Banxy (SKB), an anonymous artist, crafted the topper, which included a knitted Santa Claus, specifically for Charnwood Nursery in Thurmaston, Leicestershire, last Tuesday. Nursery staff and children expressed joy upon seeing the adorned postbox; however, by Saturday, the knitted Santa figure had been removed from its yellow knitted chair atop the display. Both Charnwood Nursery and SKB conveyed their distress regarding the “thoughtless” act of vandalism. Surveillance footage, reviewed by the BBC, reportedly depicted two masked young individuals interfering with the topper before detaching the Santa figure from the display’s summit during the early hours of Saturday. SKB informed the BBC: “It is especially upsetting to learn that the little children have been particularly upset by this thoughtless incident.” Natalie Palmer, the assistant manager at Charnwood Nursery, stated that the children had “loved seeing it every day” but were distressed to discover its disappearance within days. She further commented: “It’s a time when people should be coming together and being kind to each other.” Mrs. Palmer also added: “The fact that it’s been destroyed outside of a nursery, which is for small children, it just seems extremely sad.” Mrs. Palmer recounted that she had initially reached out to SKB to inquire about knitted visual aids for storytelling purposes. Although the prolific knitter was unavailable to assist at that moment, she proposed creating an alternative special item. Shortly thereafter, to Mrs. Palmer’s astonishment, the Christmas topper materialized on the postbox situated outside the nursery. Regarding the CCTV footage, Mrs. Palmer remarked: “We’re just sad at the actual ferocity that they take the Santa.” BBC Leicester can be followed on Facebook, X, or Instagram.
