Plans for the introduction of smaller wheelie bins across Kirklees have been met with criticism from Members of Parliament. Kirklees Council has put forward a proposal to substitute the existing 240-litre grey wheelie bins with 180-litre versions, a change the council states would generate savings exceeding £500,000. Nevertheless, Labour MPs Jade Botterill, Paul Davies, Kim Leadbeater, and Harpreet Uppal expressed concerns that residents are already “struggling with overflowing bins,” characterizing the initiative as a “short-term financial fix” potentially leading to “long-term issues.” Kirklees Council clarified that this proposal forms part of a draft budget, which is scheduled for public consultation. In their joint statement, the MPs declared: “We understand the budgetary challenges facing local authorities like Kirklees and welcome efforts to encourage residents to recycle more and support climate commitments.” They added, “However, residents are already struglling with overflowing bins, which needs urgent attention.” Concurrently, Independent councillor Cathy Scott commented that the plans could potentially cost taxpayers “a fortune for this stupidity.” She also highlighted the “massive carbon footprint” the council would incur by disposing of the 160,000 current bins. “Are you going to burn them, bury them, or just put them on the side of the road?” she inquired. Council deputy leader Moses Crook stated that smaller bins would “reflect our commitment to recycling” and simultaneously reduce expenses. A council report indicates that this initiative is projected to save £131,000 during the 2025/26 financial year, with an additional saving of £395,000 in the subsequent year. Graham Turner, the Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, reiterated that these plans are components of a draft budget currently undergoing consultation. He urged the public to participate in the consultation process before a definitive decision is reached in March 2025.
