A disaster recovery fund has been established to assist the community in the aftermath of a fatal town centre fire that destroyed businesses. The blaze, which occurred at 05:45 GMT on 8 December and tore through a flat on Kirkby Lonsdale’s Main Street, claimed one life and necessitated emergency accommodation for twenty people. The establishment of the Kirkby Lonsdale Fire Disaster Recovery Fund was prompted by the destruction of six businesses and the impact on an additional 78. The appeal commenced with an initial contribution of £50,000 from Westmorland and Furness Council, enabling the distribution of the first round of awards prior to Christmas. Market Street continues to be inaccessible to both vehicles and pedestrians, as demolition efforts on buildings deemed structurally unsound are currently in progress. Individuals who have lost their residences and belongings, as well as those facing income loss due to business closures, are eligible to apply for grants through the Cumbria Community Foundation. This initiative is a collaboration with the council and the Kirkby Lonsdale Community Cupboard. Angela Jones, from Westmorland and Furness Council and chair of the Kirkby Lonsdale Community Recovery Partnership, commented that the recovery effort is “likely to take many months, if not years.” She further noted that the fire “has caused significant financial hardship and emotional distress for those directly affected and also to the whole community.” The appeal has established an initial fundraising goal of £100,000. Ms Jones also mentioned that they are collaborating with Lizzi Collinge MP to advocate for government matching of donations. Councillor Paul Cassell, chair of Kirkby Lonsdale Town Council, stated that the fund’s purpose is to “support all families and individuals affected by the tragic fire that has devastated our beloved town.” He added, “We have witnessed so many unseen acts of support and help and give our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all those who have been kind enough to donate.” Readers can follow BBC Cumbria on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram, and submit story ideas to northeastandcumbria@bbc.co.uk.
