The Church of England has announced that King Charles III has nominated Truro’s new bishop. Bishop David Williams, who currently serves as the Bishop of Basingstoke, disclosed this information during an online service. The service, which was streamed from St Meriadoc School in Camborne, was attended by over 3,000 viewers. Bishop Williams is scheduled to formally assume his position as the Bishop of Truro in early 2025. His official responsibilities are anticipated to commence “probably in late April or early May.” Having visited Cornwall for three decades, Bishop Williams expressed his eagerness to connect with the local populace and understand the “essence of what it means to be Cornish.” He further stated, “I can’t tell you how excited I am.” Bishop Williams has held his present position for 10 years, following 25 years of service as a parish priest. He remarked that his visits to Cornwall consistently left him feeling “always gone home with a sense of wellbeing and being refreshed,” adding that he could “not wait to be here.” While acknowledging anticipated challenges like declining congregation numbers, Bishop Williams conveyed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to employ “new and creative ways to gather and reimagine how we tell the story [of Jesus].” He asserted, “Yes there are challenges, but there are far more opportunities and far more joy.” Bishop Williams expressed his aspiration to collaborate with colleagues to deliver “non-anxious leadership, trust in God and the innate strength of the people of this county.” He concluded by stating: “We’ll remind ourselves that light shines in the darkness and darkness never puts out the light. That there is always hope that will replace despair and love will always triumph over evil.”
