A primary thoroughfare in Reading is scheduled for an overnight closure to facilitate the installation of a new bridge. This pedestrian and cycle bridge, measuring 154ft (47m) in length and 16ft (5m) in width, is being positioned across the River Kennet. The placement of the bridge necessitates the closure of the A33 relief road, specifically the section between Bennet Road and the IDR (A329), from 18:00 GMT on Saturday until 09:00 on Sunday. A clearly marked diversion route will be established, directing traffic via Bennet Road. The 53-tonne bridge was transported to its location in two segments, and two cranes are designated to hoist the structure into its final position. According to Reading Borough Council, the bridge will enable the expansion of the bus lane system without encroaching upon space allocated for general traffic. John Ennis, who serves as the authority’s climate strategy and transport lead, stated: “Overall, this project will provide even quicker and more reliable journeys for bus passengers travelling between south Reading and the town centre.” He further indicated that it will enhance accessibility to retail outlets and enterprises that were formerly challenging to reach via public transportation. This bridge forms a component of the South Reading Bus Rapid Transit scheme, which received £26m in funding from the Department for Transport.
