A sports facility, previously deemed “condemned” for a five-year period due to health and safety concerns, is set to undergo renovation works following a £1 million investment. Specifically, the artificial sports pitch located at Thurston Drive in Kettering, Northamptonshire, has secured an £810,330 grant from the Football Foundation, earmarked for facility enhancements. Additional funding includes £150,000 provided by West Northamptonshire Council and £50,000 from the Northamptonshire Football Association. Helen Howell, representing the Conservative-controlled council, expressed “real excitement and anticipation” regarding the initiative. This undertaking is among approximately 30 projects supported by the Lionesses Futures Fund, a £30 million investment jointly provided by the Premier League, the Football Association, and the government’s Football Foundation. According to reports from the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the fund was established last year to acknowledge England’s triumph at Euro 2022 and their participation in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. During a recent meeting, it was noted that the artificial pitch in Kettering had been a site for anti-social behaviour and vandalism since its closure in 2019, following its assessment as unsafe for public use. The planned facility upgrades include redeveloping the pitch with a “3G surface,” along with improvements to lighting and spectator zones. Additionally, the pavilion will undergo renovation to feature enhanced changing facilities and a cafe.
