American recording artist Kendrick Lamar has unveiled an unexpected new album titled GNX. This 12-song collection, marking the artist’s sixth studio effort, became available on his social media platforms approximately at 17:00 GMT on Friday. It includes collaborations with American R&B artist SZA and Kamasi Washington, among other contributors. GNX represents Lamar’s initial album release since 2022’s Mr Morale & The Big Steppers, preceding his scheduled headlining appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show in February. This release concludes a significant year for Lamar, whose recent musical output has been influenced by an ongoing rivalry with Canadian artist Drake. Speculation had circulated for several months that Lamar, a recipient of multiple Grammy Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Music, was developing a new musical endeavor. Initial assessments of the album have largely been favorable, with listeners also expressing commendation for his latest work on social media platforms. AP News commented, “Whatever comes next, the Pulitzer Prize winner has written another thrilling chapter in what remains the most fascinating longform story in hip-hop.” The publication characterized Lamar as “an ambitious and searingly talented poet from Compton working through his – and the world’s – contradictions on the biggest stage, forever discomforted by his crown.” Rating Game Music stated that the album “reminds us why he’s one of the greats,” yet also remarked: “Overall, this album doesn’t feel like a monumental release – it’s more like a creative purge, a way for Kendrick to get a few ideas out of his system.” They further speculated: “My guess? The real project is on the horizon.” There had been conjectures that Taylor Swift might feature on the album, but the pop artist does not seem to be included. The two artists have collaborated previously, with Lamar contributing to Swift’s song “Bad Blood” from her album 1989. Nevertheless, SZA contributes vocals to two songs, “luther” and “gloria.” Lamar and SZA recently participated in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, discussing various subjects from spirituality to mental well-being. Additional tracks featured are “tv off,” “dodger blue,” “peekaboo,” and “gnx.” In the initial track, “wacced out murals,” Lamar makes reference to his forthcoming Super Bowl appearance. This highly sought-after performance occurs during the NFL season’s concluding event and attracts a substantial American viewership. Yet, it generated some dissatisfaction among fans of Lil Wayne, who believed he should have been chosen. The Compton rapper sings, “I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down,” and “Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me.” Furthermore, the new album emerges amidst an extended dispute with Drake, which has spanned several years but intensified significantly earlier this year, as both rappers exchanged disparaging remarks through a series of new tracks. This rivalry led to the creation of several prominent songs, particularly Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” Driven by an compelling DJ Mustard production, “Not Like Us” established new Spotify benchmarks, achieving the highest number of plays for a hip-hop track in a single day. It subsequently ascended to the top of the US charts and secured the sixth position in the UK, marking it as Lamar’s most successful solo recording. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
