Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher highlighted “lots of positives” following his crucial penalty save, which contributed to the Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 triumph over Finland in their concluding Nations League home fixture. Kelleher successfully blocked Joel Pohjanpalo’s penalty attempt. Evan Ferguson secured the lead for the home team with a first-half header. Subsequently, Kelleher saved Joel Pohjanpalo’s penalty, awarded after Ferguson committed a handball offense. The Liverpool goalkeeper dived to his right to thwart Pohjanpalo’s initial shot and then blocked Robin Lod’s follow-up attempt. Finland also had additional opportunities to equalize, hitting the woodwork twice before the half-time whistle. Kelleher informed RTE Sport, “Before he stepped up I looked at the run-up and went with my instincts and thankfully went the right way.” He added, “Maybe in the first half we rode our luck at times as well. Two off the post [for Finland] and good defending as well, some good blocks which you have to do at times. Thankfully we scored a great goal as well.” Kelleher further stated, “Other than the penalty there weren’t many chances in the second half so lots of positives to take from that.” This win marked manager Heimir Hallgrimsson’s inaugural home victory. It ensures that the Republic will conclude the group in third position, leading to a relegation play-off against a League C team. Conversely, Finland’s automatic relegation was confirmed by the result. Kelleher continued, “As we have seen in the last few years we maybe would have drawn or lost [tonight] but it shows the group is getting tighter and stronger.” He concluded, “We’re managing games which is important and at the end of the day the result is the most important thing and clean sheets go a long way.” The Republic of Ireland is scheduled to travel to Wembley Stadium to compete against England in their final Nations League match of the campaign on Sunday at 17:00 GMT.
