Donald Trump has declared his intention to name Karoline Leavitt, currently his campaign spokeswoman, as the White House press secretary for his upcoming administration. At 27 years old, Leavitt is set to become the youngest individual to hold the White House press secretary position in US history. In a statement, the president-elect expressed his conviction that Leavitt, a former congressional candidate who previously worked in the White House press office during Trump’s initial administration, would “excel at the podium and help deliver our message to the American People as we Make America Great Again”. Trump further stated, “Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator.” Leavitt, who hails from New Hampshire, pursued studies in communications and political science at Saint Anselm College, a Catholic institution located in her native state. During her time as a student, she completed internships at Fox News and within the White House press office during Trump’s tenure. She informed Politico in 2020 that these experiences provided her with her “first glimpse into the world of press”. According to her, these opportunities influenced her choice to pursue a career in press relations. Following her graduation in 2019, Leavitt commenced her employment with the first Trump White House, initially serving as a presidential speechwriter and subsequently as an assistant press secretary, as detailed on her campaign website for her 2022 congressional bid. Her website further indicated, “I helped prepare Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany for high-pressure briefings [and] fought against the biased mainstream media.” Subsequent to her departure from the White House, Leavitt held the position of communications director for Elise Stefanik, a prominent Republican congresswoman whom President-elect Trump has put forward as his nominee for United Nations ambassador. Leavitt resigned from that role to pursue a congressional campaign, securing the Republican nomination for New Hampshire’s first congressional district in 2022, but ultimately being defeated in the general election by Democrat Chris Pappas. The policy stances outlined on her campaign website generally correspond with numerous priorities of Donald Trump. Regarding economic matters, she committed to “CUT taxes” and to “champion pro-growth, free market policies”. She positioned herself as a staunch supporter of law enforcement and robust border security, advocating for “ZERO tolerance for illegal immigration” and stating her intention to work towards the completion of the border wall. She became part of Trump’s third campaign for the US presidency in January 2024, serving as his campaign press secretary. Currently, she has been selected for the role of White House press secretary, making her the youngest individual to hold this position in US history. Ron Ziegler previously held this distinction; he was appointed to the role by Richard Nixon in 1969 at the age of 29. The public is anticipated to soon observe Leavitt at the prominent location behind the podium in the White House briefing room, an area that was the site of numerous strained interactions between journalists and officials during Trump’s initial administration. During his first four-year term, Trump employed several press secretaries, such as Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Stephanie Grisham, and Kayleigh McEnany. Following her departure from the White House, Sanders successfully ran for and won the governorship of Arkansas. Grisham tendered her resignation subsequent to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and has since emerged as a critic of Trump. McEnany, conversely, has persisted in supporting the president-elect in her capacity as a Fox News personality.
