Swansea City winger Josh Ginnelly participated in team training on Friday, signaling a potential breakthrough in his recovery, according to head coach Luke Williams. The 27-year-old has been sidelined for over 14 months due to a ruptured Achilles and has encountered several obstacles in his rehabilitation efforts. Swansea management expresses optimism that the former Hearts player is nearing a comeback, although Williams cautioned that a full return to match action is still some distance away. Williams stated, “Gino was on the grass with the full squad for the beginning of the session. Of course we have a way to go, but it’s great to have him out there with everyone.” He added, “It was a light session and he did part of it. He looked great and he came through fine.” Williams further acknowledged the “incredible work from the medical team” and described Ginnelly’s journey as “a really tough journey for him.” He concluded that this step provides “more motivation for him – the end of a long struggle.” Ginnelly had an encouraging start to his tenure at Swansea City after joining on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. He scored two goals in his initial eight appearances before sustaining the Achilles injury against Sheffield Wednesday on 23 September, 2023. Ginnelly himself praised the medical staff, saying, “The medical team have been incredible.” He recounted an interaction from the day’s session: “Even today, Beth (Chaddock, one of Swansea’s physiotherapists) was watching him like a hawk. When he came through [the session], he ran straight over and had an embrace with her. That’s class, that’s respect.”
