Jorge Martin, who secured the Moto3 championship in 2018, has positioned himself on the cusp of claiming his inaugural MotoGP title following a sprint race triumph at the Malaysian Grand Prix on Saturday. The Spanish Pramac Ducati competitor, who finished as runner-up to Francesco Bagnaia in the previous season, now holds a 29-point advantage over the Italian. This lead allows Martin to potentially secure the championship on Sunday, especially after Bagnaia’s crash during the race. Given that 25 points are awarded for a victory, Martin would clinch the championship with one round remaining if he manages to outscore Bagnaia by nine points on Sunday. The season’s concluding race, originally scheduled for Valencia on 15 November, has been called off due to flooding in the region. A substitute final race is planned, though its location is yet to be determined. Six-time champion Marc Marquez demonstrated his ongoing recovery by securing second place on Saturday. Enea Bastianini, Bagnaia’s team-mate, completed the top three finishers. Martin overtook polesitter Bagnaia to take the lead at the first turn. Bagnaia, who had established a new lap record to claim pole position earlier on Saturday, subsequently lost control of the front end of his bike on the third lap and crashed. The reigning 2022 and 2023 champion was seen with his head in his hands, as his opportunity to secure a third consecutive championship significantly diminished. MotoGP standings Jorge Martin (Spa/Pramac Racing) 465 points Francesco Bagnaia (Ita/Ducati) 436 Marc Marquez (Spa/Gresini Racing) 365 Enea Bastianini (Ita/Ducati) 352 Brad Binder (SA/KTM) 206
