Fashion designer John Galliano has announced his resignation as creative director of Maison Margiela, concluding a 10-year tenure. In a statement posted on Instagram, Galliano communicated, “today is the day is I say goodbye” to the company, adding that his “heart overflows with joyous gratitude, and my soul smiles”. The 64-year-old did not disclose his subsequent professional role, stating simply: “When the time is right, all will be revealed.” Reports from fashion media on Wednesday indicated that Galliano was nearing the conclusion of a five-year contract but opted against its renewal. Galliano experienced a successful final year with the company, attributed to the triumph of his Artisanal 2024 collection. Dazed, a fashion and culture magazine, commented that the collection “captured the public’s imagination with its broken marionette looks and Pat McGrath’s glassy, porcelain make-up”. After its initial presentation, custom pieces from the collection were donned by rapper Bad Bunny, singer Ariana Grande, and actress Gwendoline Christie at the 2024 Met Gala. Galliano commenced his role as creative director at Margiela in 2014, a period three years after his departure from Dior. This followed an accusation that he had uttered anti-Semitic remarks in a bar. His legal representative at that time asserted that the comments stemmed from “work-related stress and multiple addictions”. A French court determined Galliano was guilty of making anti-Semitic remarks in 2011, imposing a sentence of €6,000 (£4,940) in suspended fines. The film High and Low: John Galliano, released earlier this year, chronicled his path to redemption. Reflecting on his tenure at Margiela over the last decade, Vogue, a prominent fashion publication, stated that he had “taken the cult label, beloved of art and fashion insiders under incredibly private founder Martin Margiela, to new heights”. Vogue attributed substantial growth to Galliano’s leadership at the company, noting sales increases of 24% in 2022 and 23% in 2023. The magazine further commented: “Widely revered as one of fashion’s most talented couturiers, Galliano creates a world and a story behind his clothes.” In his statement announcing his departure, Galliano expressed being “forever grateful for this safe space to create and build a new family that supports me with courage and dignity”. He also conveyed “gratitude to my fashion family for this life-saving creative moment and the safe place we have built together”. He concluded by stating: “I’ll readily admit I’m demanding and difficult to run with when challenged. But look at what we have built.” Post navigation Sustainable Fashion Event at Cathedral Aims to Address Textile Industry’s Environmental Impact Renowned Indian Fashion Designer Rohit Bal Dies at 63
