Teenager Joao Fonseca, who has not yet qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam event, defeated American Learner Tien to become the second-youngest champion of the Next Gen ATP Finals. The 18-year-old Brazilian, who participated as the youngest and lowest-ranked player in this year’s competition, overcame Tien with a score of 2-4 4-3 (10-8) 4-0 4-2 in Jeddah. Only Jannik Sinner, in 2019, achieved the title at a younger age than Fonseca. Fonseca won all five of his matches during the season-ending tournament, which features the top-ranked male players aged 21 and under. The two players had previously met in the group stage on Thursday, where Fonseca, ranked 145th in the world, also prevailed against his 19-year-old opponent. The tournament operates on a best-of-five format, with four games required to win a set. Alongside world number one Sinner, other past champions include four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz and world number 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas. Tien began the match strongly, securing the opening set in Saudi Arabia. However, Fonseca managed to level the match after a closely contested second set that included a lengthy tie-break. Following this, he successfully disrupted his opponent’s rhythm and clinched the title in the fourth set. “I was really nervous before the match. I knew it was going to be so difficult,” Fonseca stated. “I played a final against Learner in juniors at the 2023 US Open and I know the way he can play. He is such a nice guy and a great player, so I knew it was going to be difficult, mentally and physically. But I got through.” Prior to the final, Fonseca had expressed his ambition to emulate Sinner, for whom he served as a hitting partner at last year’s ATP Finals. Fonseca mentioned that it was at this event that the Italian convinced him to turn professional.
