Jersey’s bus operator, LibertyBus, is conducting passenger-free trials of an “emissions-free” bus this month. The company announced that the double-decker vehicle would be tested on several of its routes until December 13. Subsequently, if these initial operational runs prove successful, it will transport paying customers on route 15. LibertyBus stated that while it had previously conducted electric bus trials, it aimed to evaluate newer models before making purchasing decisions, noting that technology had “moved on” in recent years. Director Kevin Hart expressed the company’s enthusiasm for the trial and its confidence that the bus would be suitable for the island’s road network. This new bus measures approximately 15cm longer than the existing double-decker fleet. Mr. Hart also indicated that LibertyBus plans to invite feedback from customers once the trials have concluded. According to the company, the battery-powered electric bus currently undergoing trials can accommodate up to 73 passengers and is expected to maintain “operating costs to a minimum”.
