An investment exceeding £30 million has been announced, forming part of initiatives designed to stimulate businesses in Jersey. The Government of Jersey has introduced three distinct programs. These include a “Better Business Support Package” valued at £20 million, intended to assist companies in enhancing productivity and adapting to adjustments in the minimum wage. Additionally, the Agricultural Loans Fund has been reactivated with £10 million allocated to aid farmers and agricultural enterprises. The Impact Jersey CX Tech Programme will also provide up to £500,000 in match funding, aimed at enhancing customer experiences. Prominent industry figures on the island have characterized the proposed investment as “essential” assistance. Deputy Kirsten Morel, the Sustainable Economic Development Minister, stated that the investment is designed to foster economic growth. He remarked: “To achieve our ambition of becoming a high performing, environmentally sustainable and technologically advanced small island economy by 2040, we need to invest in change.” The government indicated that the Better Business Support Package, pending approval from the States Assembly as part of the budget, will incorporate various initiatives to boost productivity. Furthermore, the package is intended to help businesses adapt to the minimum wage increase to £13 per hour, effective 1 April 2025, prior to its adjustment to two-thirds of the 2024 median wage in the subsequent year. Business leaders expressed approval for the funding proposals. Marcus Calvani, co-chief executive of the Jersey Hospitality Association, commented that it would “play a crucial role in fostering growth.” Mr. Calvani further stated: “This targeted and substantial financial support is essential for our industry, especially as we navigate both the implementation of a new minimum wage and broader economic challenges.” The reintroduction of the Agricultural Loans Scheme, which had been inactive since 2003, has also garnered positive reception from industry leaders. Douglas Richardson, president of the Jersey Farmers’ Union, remarked: “These measures ensure we will continue to maintain a viable and sustainable farming sector as a vital part of island life.” The government explained that the CXTech Programme is designed to develop and implement technology-driven solutions to enhance customer experiences across Jersey’s retail, tourism, hospitality, and logistics industries. Tony Moretta, chief executive of Digital Jersey, added that the program was conceived to create a “positive impact” for both visitors and the retail sectors.
