Health officials in Jersey have announced enhancements to the island’s breast screening initiative. Going forward, women who have not previously enrolled for breast screening will automatically receive an invitation for an examination upon reaching their 50th birthday. This initiative has been facilitated by a new £255,000 mammography device, funded by The John Clive Le Seelleur Trust, alongside financial contributions from the charity Jersey Cancer Relief. Situated at the Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre, this equipment is designated for standard screening procedures. While women previously had to register for breast screening upon turning 50, starting in 2025, they will automatically be invited for screening during their 50th year, retaining the option to decline if they choose. Furthermore, this new apparatus will serve as a contingency, available for use should the mammography unit at the General Hospital, which caters to symptomatic individuals, require maintenance. Deputy Andy Howell, Assistant Minister for Health and Social Services, stated: “I’m delighted to announce changes to our breast screening programme which will both improve a woman’s access to care and their experience as a patient.” He added, “I would like to thank Jersey Cancer Relief and The John Clive Le Seelleur Trust for their incredible support which means we can ensure that all women are invited for breast screening when they become eligible. Early detection is vital in saving lives.” Separately, a new mammography machine, financed by HCS, is slated for installation at the General Hospital during the first quarter of next year, intended to replace the existing equipment.
