Jersey Minister Advances Food Labeling Legislation for Drafting

Proposals for updated legislation governing food labeling and control within Jersey have received approval from the minister overseeing the relevant area. Deputy Steve Luce, the Environment Minister, informed Jersey’s scrutiny committee of his dedication to implementing food labeling regulations aimed at safeguarding individuals with allergies. This proposed legislation is designed to introduce more stringent requirements for ingredient labeling, thereby assisting those with allergies. According to Luce, the proposals have now advanced to the stage of legal drafting. Concerns regarding potential risks to consumers from improperly labeled food were highlighted at a recent conference held in Jersey. In September, the minister indicated that the progress on the Food Law (Jersey) 2023 had been hampered by the departure of specialized personnel. The States of Jersey voted in December 2022 to revise the island’s food labeling legislation, which had been characterized as “outdated and not fit for purpose in the 21st Century”.
