Experts have noted that Jersey recorded a higher number of Asian hornet nests within a single week than the total found across the entire UK during 2024. The Jersey Asian Hornet Group reported tracking 24 nests across 10 distinct parishes from October 21 to October 27. In comparison, the Animal and Plant Health Agency has indicated that 21 nests have been located in the UK up to this point in 2024. John de Carteret, a representative of the Jersey group, stated that the majority of these nests were discovered in trees or within wooded areas. Specific findings included one nest that had fallen onto rocks at White Rock in St Martin, and another situated in a garden in St Lawrence. Mr. de Carteret attributed the increased visibility of the nests to strong winds from approximately two weeks prior, which had removed the protective leaf cover. He also noted that no nests were identified in St Clement or St Ouen. The group monitors this invasive species due to its predatory nature towards bees and other pollinators. It is important to note that these hornets do not present a higher risk to human health compared to native hornets. Asian hornets are distinguishable by their orange heads, dark brown or black bodies, dark abdomens, and yellow-tipped legs, and are generally smaller than indigenous hornets.
