A Jersey-based team that raises funds for a charity assisting children diagnosed with cancer is ceasing its operations. The Teenager Cancer Trust Jersey was established by Irene Haycock in 2009, following her son Calvin’s diagnosis with the disease at age 14. Over the past 15 years, the group has successfully raised £2.5 million, but it has now announced its decision to conclude its work. A spokesperson for the charity commended the group’s efforts, stating they had gone “above and beyond.” The spokesperson also sought to assure young cancer patients in Jersey that essential support and care would continue to be provided. Ms Haycock commented: “I could never have imagined that we could have achieved so much.” She added, “From a small volunteering committee who have been outstanding in their support and commitment, we have raised an incredible £2.5m.” Ms Haycock further stated, “This has made a huge difference to teenagers in Jersey who have experienced cancer.” She concluded, “I have met some of the most amazing and courageous people along the way and I hope that support on the island continues to enable the charity to provide the best services to young people who experience cancer now and in the future.” Kate Collins, the chief executive of Teenage Cancer Trust, expressed the charity’s gratitude for the “absolutely outstanding” support contributed by the Jersey appeal. Ms Collins remarked: “The Jersey appeal’s support has made a huge difference to young people with cancer and their impact will live on.” Helen Farquharson, a senior relationship manager at the Teenage Cancer Trust, confirmed that the charity would maintain its provision of care and support for young patients in Jersey. She also noted that volunteering and support opportunities remain available for individuals in Jersey interested in assisting the charity. Ms Farquharson stated: “The group is winding down it’s fundraising operations, but their work and our work will live on and we’d love people in Jersey to carry on being involved.”
