Jersey Electricity (JE) has announced a scheme involving a £120m investment for what it describes as the “largest ever” enhancement of the island’s power grid. According to the company, this five-year modernization initiative aims to facilitate an “all-electric future” and guarantee that all residences and commercial establishments have access to energy that is both affordable and sustainable. It further stated that this undertaking would be “over and above” current work programs, designed to accommodate an anticipated 25% rise in demand. Mark Preece, the chief operating officer (COO) of Jersey Electricity, indicated that customers should expect to observe construction activities across the island, acknowledging that these might “cause frustrations,” but he urged islanders to “bear with” the company. The government has previously outlined its strategy for Jersey to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, a plan that encompasses assisting island residents in transitioning from oil or gas heating systems to low carbon alternatives. JE stated that this significant upgrade is projected to double the yearly installation rate of cables, and 10% of the low voltage network will be improved, enabling 20,000 customers to convert to electricity as fossil fuel heating systems are gradually eliminated, consistent with the government’s Carbon Neutral Roadmap (CNR). The provider also mentioned that smart meter data will be utilized to identify areas of demand or capacity. Mr Preece stated: “Over the coming years, we expect to see continued transformation in how we use electricity as a society.” “From the base of a sustainable, secure, future-proofed electricity network, we can be certain that our Island can continue to prosper.” “Customers can expect to see JE and our partners around the island delivering this essential upgrade.” “Although some works will be less visible than others, we understand that roadworks can cause frustrations to islanders.” “We hope everyone can bear with us over the coming years as we deliver The Big Upgrade and continue to power our island long into the future.” Post navigation Shell and Equinor Announce Merger of North Sea Oil and Gas Assets Guernsey Electricity Ensures Uninterrupted Pre-Pay Supply During Holidays
