A representative of Reform Jersey has conveyed her sentiment of being “deeply honoured” after receiving an accolade at an international assembly of political figures. St Saviour Deputy Raluca Kovacs was awarded the 2024 New Parliamentarian Award during the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference. The CPA indicated that the award was bestowed upon her “in recognition of her contribution to promoting parliamentary democracy.” Other distinctions presented at the event, which occurred in Sydney, Australia, from November 3 to 8, were granted to parliamentarians from Pakistan, Guyana, and New South Wales. Ms Kovacs was initially elected to Jersey’s States Assembly in June 2022, and has since participated in numerous panels and committees. The CPA noted that she had “advanced the principles of good governance” since assuming her position, highlighting her proposal to increase financial support for parents with infants in neonatal care as an example of her political achievements. In a statement posted on LinkedIn, Ms Kovacs remarked: “As the first Romanian elected to a British parliament, this award holds special significance for me, highlighting my journey over the past two and a half years in an assembly where English is not my first language.” The CPA defines itself as an international collective that collaborates to “deepen the Commonwealth’s commitment to the highest standards of democratic governance.”
