The sale or provision of disposable vapes in Jersey could be deemed an offense from April 2025, pending the approval of a proposed measure. Government ministers intend to amend existing legislation pertaining to single-use plastics to include a prohibition on e-cigarettes. Constable Andy Jehan, who introduced these plans to the States Assembly, noted that a considerable number of young individuals use disposable vapes. He also emphasized an environmental concern, stating that these devices are harmful because most are not recycled. He articulated: “The increasing popularity of single use vapes means there are more vapes being disposed of in various ways, all of which are problematic.” He further added: “The use of materials including plastics, metals and a lithium battery in each single use device starkly contrasts with sustainability commitments to reduce waste, maximise resources and reorientate behaviour towards the circular economy.” This proposition mirrors similar actions taken in the UK and Guernsey, where such an act will constitute a criminal offense. The States Assembly is scheduled to hold its earliest debate on this proposition on 10 December.
