It has been confirmed that disposable vapes will be prohibited in Jersey beginning next year. The States Assembly endorsed the propositions from the infrastructure minister, who expressed apprehension about the ecological impact of single-use vapes. The States reached a unanimous agreement on Wednesday, with 45 votes in favour and 0 against. Retail establishments will be allowed to sell off their existing stock before the prohibition takes effect. The objective is to address the environmental repercussions of disposable vapes, which contain plastics, metals, and a lithium battery. Constable Andy Jehan, who introduced the plans to the States Assembly, had previously indicated that a high proportion of young people utilized disposable vapes. He remarked: “The increasing popularity of single use vapes means there are more vapes being disposed of in various ways, all of which are problematic.” He also stated: “The use of materials including plastics, metals and a lithium battery in each single use device starkly contrasts with sustainability commitments to reduce waste, maximise resources and re orientate behaviour towards the circular economy.” This action mirrors similar initiatives in the UK and Guernsey, where it will be considered a criminal offence.
