Public officials and corporate employees were among the participants in a charitable sleep-out held in a Jersey car park. Organizers reported that over 120 individuals took part in the six-year-running event, which occurred on the 11th and 12th floors of the multi-storey structure. The Sanctuary Trust, a charity dedicated to assisting homeless men by providing emergency accommodation, announced that approximately £23,800 had been collected thus far from the activity at Pier Road car park on Friday night. The trust confirmed that Housing Minister Sam Mezec joined the challenge, noting that the oldest participant was 75 years old, while the youngest was aged six. Tim Ringsdore, chairman of the Sanctuary Trust, stated that the initiative, which secured around £35,000 in donations in 2023, aimed to increase public understanding of homelessness. “Given how cold it was, everyone appreciated the hardship this can cause,” he remarked. He added, “All money raised will go towards our running costs to ensure our team can continue providing the diverse range of support our residents require. Our vision is to tackle homelessness in our community and this event certainly helps this aim and we really appreciate the generosity from everyone who supports us.” Organizers also mentioned that Paul McGinnety, director of local services, participated in the event, alongside representatives from Jersey Youth Service, Specsavers, JT Global, and Andium Homes. Sarah Tumelty, the trust’s general manager, described the atmosphere as “special.” She commented, “Despite the cold and windy weather, so many people came together in solidarity, which was inspiring to see.” Tumelty concluded, “This effort will raise awareness and highlight the critical need for support and compassion for those experiencing homelessness in our community.”
