Antonia Rubio, a cancer survivor from Jersey, has been distributing gifts to young cancer patients on the island, specifically those aged 17 to 25. Ms. Rubio recounted that she spent the previous Christmas recuperating from her cancer treatment, finding it difficult to fully experience the holiday period. Since her diagnosis in 2023, Ms. Rubio has utilized her social media platforms to document her personal journey and offer support to others. Now, a year later and having overcome cancer, she expressed a desire to assist individuals undergoing comparable situations. She stated: “I’ve met a lot of people in the cancer community through the past year and I’ve been hearing about people who are newly diagnosed in the islands and I just kept thinking about how scary that must be for them. I know how it is to be in that position as a young person and you miss out on a lot of things that normal teens go through and twenty-year-olds go through and I just wanted to remind them that they still deserve to have a nice time.” A total of seven hampers, prepared for four boys and three girls, were customized for each recipient, containing items such as overnight hotel stays, colouring books, and self-care products. According to Ms. Rubio, the individuals who received the gifts expressed considerable gratitude and surprise. She further commented: “It wasn’t the big present that they were actually excited about, it was the little things that were kind of personal to them.” She added, “That made me really happy because I was able to think about what I would have wanted last year and channel that into making the hampers.”
