A legal representative for rapper Jay-Z has requested a court to throw out a lawsuit that alleges he, alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs, raped a 13-year-old girl in 2000. This request follows the appearance of discrepancies within the accuser’s claims. The legal action identifies an Alabama woman by the pseudonym Jane Doe, who has made accusations that the two musicians drugged and assaulted her at a post-MTV Video Music Awards house party. She asserted that she conversed with a celebrity at the gathering; however, a representative for that celebrity stated he was touring at that period. Furthermore, her father informed NBC News that he does not remember making a five-hour drive to collect her following the alleged attack, as she has stated. During an interview with NBC, the woman admitted to having made “some mistakes” in her allegations, yet affirmed her commitment to her core claim. Organizations that provide support for rape victims indicate that it is not unusual for individuals who have experienced such assaults to recall certain details inaccurately, particularly if they were reportedly drugged. This specific lawsuit is one of numerous sexual assault cases brought against Mr Combs, who is currently detained and awaiting trial in New York on federal sex-trafficking charges. He was refused bail for the third time in the previous month. Mr Combs refutes all accusations. Alex Spiro, Jay-Z’s attorney, formally requested the court to dismiss Jane Doe’s lawsuit. In a statement provided to the BBC, Spiro remarked: “It is stunning that a lawyer would not only file such a serious complaint without proper vetting, but would make things worse by further peddling this false story in the press.” Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, released a statement to the BBC, asserting that the attorney, Tony Buzbee, initiated the legal proceedings “in pursuit of money and fame”. His statement continued: “This incident didn’t happen and yet he filed it in court and doubled down in the press.” The statement further declared: “True Justice is coming. We fight FROM victory, not FOR victory. This was over before it began. This 1-800 lawyer doesn’t realize it yet, but, soon.” A legal representative for Mr Combs conveyed in a statement to the BBC: “Today, for the second time this week, a Buzbee plaintiff has been exposed. This is the beginning of the end of this shameful money grab.” A cautionary note: This report includes information that some readers might find upsetting. Mr Buzbee indicated that his law firm was still in the process of scrutinizing his client’s assertions. The woman states in the lawsuit that a waitress at the party provided her with a drink that caused her to feel “woozy,” prompting her to retreat to a room to rest. According to the legal filing, shortly thereafter, Mr Combs and Mr Carter entered the room accompanied by a female celebrity, referred to as Celebrity B. The lawsuit alleges that Mr Carter restrained and raped her, after which Mr Combs committed the same act, with Celebrity B reportedly observing the entire time. Nevertheless, photographic evidence from that night places Jay-Z and Mr Combs at a different venue than the one the accuser specified. It remains uncertain whether their complete whereabouts for the duration of the evening have been verified. In her allegation, the woman asserted that she had conversed with musicians Benji and Joel Madden, whom she identified as being among several celebrities present at the house party. She has not accused them of any misconduct. However, a spokesperson for the Madden brothers informed NBC that the siblings were touring in the Midwest during the MTV Video Music Awards that particular year. The woman’s father conveyed to NBC that he has no recollection of driving over five hours to retrieve his daughter following her reported traumatic experience. He stated: “I feel like I would remember that, and I don’t.” Mr Buzbee, the woman’s attorney, informed NBC that his client maintains her assertion. He added: “Our client remains fiercely adamant that what she has stated is true, to the best of her memory.” He further stated: “We will continue to vet her claims and collect corroborating data to the extent it exists.” Mr Buzbee also mentioned: “Because we have interrogated her intensely, she has even agreed to submit to a polygraph. I’ve never had a client suggest that before.” The woman, currently 38 years old and a mother of two, shared in an interview with NBC from Houston, Texas: “You should never let what somebody else did ruin or run your life. “I just hope I can give others the strength to come forward like I came forward.” Erinn Robinson, who serves as the director of media relations for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), commented that “trauma like rape can have both short- and long-term effects on the brain that influence decision making and memory.” She informed the BBC: “Recall of memories may be fragmented, and details may not be recalled in the right order.” Ms Robinson noted that these impacts are frequently observed and stated that police departments receive training to handle such situations, aiming to lessen the chance of allegations being rejected due to a victim’s memory appearing disconnected or contradictory.
