Japanese actor Miho Nakayama, 54, was discovered deceased in a bathtub at her Tokyo residence on Friday. Ms Nakayama achieved success as a singer during the 1980s and 90s, a period coinciding with the peak of J-pop’s influence. Nevertheless, she was most widely recognized for her starring role in the 1995 film Love Letter. Local media outlets reported that an acquaintance located Ms Nakayama on Friday after she did not report for work. Paramedics were then summoned and confirmed her death at the scene. The cause of her death remains under investigation. She had been slated to perform a Christmas show in Osaka on Friday, but withdrew, citing poor health. Her agency released a statement on her website on Friday, confirming her death. The statement conveyed: “We are stunned by the sudden occurrence of this event,” and further noted that her cause of death had not been confirmed. Ms Nakayama, who was recognized as one of Japan’s most popular teen idols in the 1980s, also had a distinguished acting career. Her most notable role was as the lead in the 1995 film Love Letter, which depicted a grieving widow’s correspondence with a stranger. The film achieved significant box office success and garnered critical acclaim both domestically and internationally. Ms Nakayama’s performance earned her several best actress awards.
