American actor James Van Der Beek has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The 47-year-old, recognized for his starring roles in the television series Dawson’s Creek and the film Varsity Blues, shared details of his diagnosis and ongoing treatment with People magazine. He stated, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it.” Van Der Beek also expressed “optimism” regarding his condition and reported that he is “feeling good.” BBC News has contacted a representative for the actor for comment. According to the Cleveland Clinic, colorectal cancer originates from growths within the colon’s inner lining and possesses the potential to metastasize if left untreated. This particular type of cancer is observed more frequently in men than in women. The clinic highlights that enhanced screening measures have contributed to earlier detection, thereby reducing the mortality rate associated with colorectal cancer. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Van Der Beek appeared in several well-known television programs and movies. His role as Dawson Leery in the successful TV series Dawson’s Creek spanned from 1998 to 2003. Additionally, he portrayed a fictionalized version of himself in the cult television series Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and participated in the 28th US season of Dancing with the Stars. Despite his diagnosis, Van Der Beek has maintained his professional commitments. He currently has two projects underway, one of which is a Tubi original film titled Sidelined: The QB and Me, scheduled for release later this month. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
