Italy secured their fifth Billie Jean King Cup championship, marking their first triumph in the competition in 11 years, after Jasmine Paolini finalized a 2-0 victory against Slovakia in Malaga. Paolini, experiencing a standout 2024 season, had been a member of the Italian squad that placed second to Canada a year prior. The world number four player achieved a 6-2 6-1 win over Rebecca Sramkova, following Lucia Bronzetti’s initial 6-2 6-4 victory against Viktoria Hruncakova in the opening singles contest, which gave Italy the lead. “I always dreamed about this trophy,” stated Bronzetti, who was participating in only her second singles match within the tournament. She added, “We are the world champions, we can be much happier. It is a dream of all of ours and we are so proud.” Italy, set to receive $2.4m (£1.9m) in prize money for securing their fifth title, has recently emerged as a significant force in tennis, notably with its men’s team, spearheaded by world number one Jannik Sinner, claiming its inaugural Davis Cup in 47 years during 2023. “I think it’s an unbelievable year for Italian tennis and it’s so good for our sport in our country,” Paolini informed reporters. She further commented, “We have a lot of fans of tennis in Italy now, tennis is growing a lot.” Captain Tathiana Garbin stated: “It’s a dream come true. I have such great champions, great players, and great human beings. “I am so proud of them. They fight every day.” Slovakia, having eliminated Great Britain on Tuesday, was competing in their first final since their victory in the tournament in 2002. Paolini had been a runner-up at both the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year, in addition to reaching the last 16 at the Australian and US Open. She was ranked 30th when she lost to Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the previous year’s final, having never progressed beyond the second round of a major tournament before then. However, the 28-year-old has experienced an exceptional 2024, reaching the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, and subsequently securing Olympic doubles gold in Paris alongside Sara Errani. Paolini raised her arms in triumph and moved jubilantly around the court with her team-mates after securing the championship for Italy. “An unbelievable year, a crazy year. To finish like this with a title in the Billie Jean King Cup is amazing. I don’t have words to describe it,” Paolini commented. Sramkova, ranked 43rd, had demonstrated impressive form throughout the preceding week, defeating world number 11 Danielle Collins of the USA and then recovering to overcome British number one Katie Boulter. Nevertheless, she faced difficulties against Paolini, who capitalized on the Slovak player’s 28 unforced errors and claimed four consecutive games to secure the win. Paolini’s victory meant Italy did not require a decisive doubles match in the best-of-three series and prevented Sara Errani from making her 50th Billie Jean King Cup appearance. Paolini further stated: “I’m trying just to enjoy every moment because its important also to understand where you are and I feel lucky to be in this position, I feel lucky to be part of this team. “I think we played an unbelievable week and I’m really happy this year that we could bring the trophy home again.”
