Israel is investigating a claim made by Hamas that a female hostage died during Israeli military operations in northern Gaza. Hamas did not disclose the woman’s identity, and the circumstances or timing of her reported death remain unspecified. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that it could not currently “verify or refute” the assertion, but confirmed that its representatives are communicating with the woman’s family. In a statement, the IDF noted, “This evening the terrorist organization Hamas released a document in which a kidnapped woman is allegedly seen killed.” The statement added, “We are checking the information and at this stage we are unable to verify or refute it.” Hamas asserted that contact with the individuals holding the woman had been re-established recently, following a period of several weeks, which then led to the revelation of her death. Abu Ubeida, who serves as the spokesman for the al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, indicated that a second female hostage, held alongside the deceased woman, had sustained injuries and was in a life-threatening condition. Israeli officials estimate that approximately 60 hostages are still alive in Gaza, in addition to the remains of dozens more who are presumed deceased. Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, the United Kingdom, and numerous other countries. This development occurred as Israel continued its military operations throughout Gaza on Saturday. The Hamas-run health ministry in the territory reported that Israeli airstrikes had resulted in the deaths of approximately 120 individuals across the area within the preceding 48 hours. Israel initiated a campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas following the group’s unprecedented assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, an event that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 others. Since that time, nearly 44,000 individuals have been killed and over 104,000 injured in Gaza, as per figures from the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.
