The Isle of Man’s healthcare provider has initiated a public campaign to recruit part-time foster carers. Manx Care’s family placement service is actively seeking individuals to provide accommodation for children for “short breaks”. The objective of this initiative is to offer support to full-time foster carers and parents who may be dealing with medical conditions or require a period of respite from their caregiving duties. Manx Care stated that this form of short-term or emergency assistance could “mean the difference between a happy long-term outcome and a serious crisis”. The healthcare organization clarified that it is broadening its foster carer recruitment efforts “to encourage people who want to foster, but who may not have the time or ability to do this on a 24/7 basis”. Ed Coates, the fostering and adoption group manager, commented: “Our foster carers come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a wide range of life and work experiences with them.” He further elaborated: “They are the backbone of our service, and make a huge contribution by opening their homes and building trusting relationships with children, young people and often their families”. Mr. Coates also highlighted that “the common thread is they all need that extra bit of support and stability”. He explained: “As a short break carer, you may be in full or part-time employment, but will need to be able to provide some time either on a regular or planned basis.”
