The public has been advised to familiarize themselves with the healthcare options accessible during the festive season, should they be required. The Isle of Man’s health service stated that essential services will be available, though some will operate under modified schedules. This advice comes after a request from the public health directorate to remember “good respiratory etiquette” to slow the spread of winter illnesses and alleviate pressure on services. Public Health consultant Ross Keat noted that increased time spent indoors facilitates the transmission of winter viruses such as flu, Covid, RSV, and the vomiting bug Norovirus more readily. Individuals feeling unwell are advised to contact their GP surgery or an island pharmacy for guidance on winter infections, instead of attending in person, which risks spreading infection. Certain services, including Ramsey Cottage Hospital’s Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) and the accident and emergency department at Noble’s Hospital, will maintain their regular operating hours; however, X-ray services will not be provided at the northern facility during bank holidays. In light of the Christmas period adjustments, Manx Care has modified the service hours for provisions such as the Manx Emergency Doctors Service (MEDS) and Patient Transfer. MEDS will operate continuously for 24 hours on days when GP practices are closed, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day, but on other days, its operational hours will be from 18:00 GMT until midnight. It was also reiterated that community pharmacists can be “a reliable source of advice and support” and can also offer certain treatments via the Minor Ailments Scheme. Details of these revised operating times for the period are available online. The Patient Transfer office is scheduled to be closed from December 25 to 29, and additionally on January 1; however, the air ambulance service co-ordinator remains reachable during the weekend for urgent situations. Emergency dental care will be accessible according to the emergency dental rota schedule. The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service at Noble’s Hospital will operate from 09:30 to 13:30, with closures observed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Macmillan’s national UK support line will nonetheless be operational daily between 08:00 and 20:00. Manx Care’s vaccination service will not be available from Wednesday through Friday, nor on New Year’s Day, with regular operations scheduled to recommence at 09:30 on January 2. Dr. Keat emphasized that the festive period could be “very isolating for some people” and advised individuals experiencing loneliness to “reach out to the people in your support network, co-workers, friends, family.” He added, “There are also charities you can reach out to in terms of crisis.” Manx Care confirmed the availability of its Crisis Response Home Treatment Team during this time and noted that the Samaritans helpline is operational 24 hours daily, year-round. However, the healthcare provider specified that for medical emergencies or circumstances that “present an imminent risk of harm,” individuals must initially contact 999.
