Irish police, known as Gardaí, have commenced a renewed search operation across open terrain in north County Dublin as part of their ongoing investigation into the disappearance and suspected murder of Willie Maughan and Anastasija Varslavane. The pair was last observed on April 14, 2015. Authorities have indicated that the designated land will undergo comprehensive searching, excavation, and technical and forensic analysis in the days ahead. Upon their vanishing, an initial investigative theory suggested the couple may have been killed by an organized criminal group. Having been in a relationship since 2014, the couple resided in a caravan located in Gormanston, County Meath. Mr. Maughan had made plans to move back to his family residence in Tallaght, accompanied by Ms. Varslavane. On the morning of Tuesday, April 14, 2015, Mr. Maughan traveled to Balbriggan, with Ms. Varslavane joining him a short time later. They conducted various errands and subsequently contacted William’s mother to coordinate her journey from Tallaght to Gormanston to pick up both individuals and their possessions. William communicated with his mother around 14:30 local time, requesting her to proceed to Gormanston for their collection. Shortly after 14:30, Mr. Maughan and Ms. Varslavane shared a taxi ride from Balbriggan to Gormanston. Mr. Maughan’s mother reached Gormanston just prior to 15:00, but was unable to find her son. She then drove to Stamullen in an attempt to locate him, without success. Upon returning to Gormanston, she attempted to call his mobile phone, but the call immediately went to voicemail. As Mr. Maughan and Ms. Varslavane failed to appear, Mr. Maughan’s mother grew gravely concerned and subsequently reported both of them missing. The investigation was reclassified as a murder inquiry after a comprehensive review of the case in September 2016. Gardaí have reiterated their appeal for any individuals possessing information regarding the couple’s disappearance and murder to come forward and contact them.
